Starlinger introduces new generation woven plastic packaging solutions

PKBR Staff Writer Published 19 December 2016

Austria-based packaging products manufacturer Starlinger has introduced a new generation of 'bottle-to-bag' woven plastic packaging solutions.

The firm said that the development of the production technology for woven plastic sacks made from rPET will address growing concern of overflowing landfill, plastic waste in ocean.

The new solution is intended to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging with focus on reusability, bio-degradability and recyclability of the packaging materials.

Starlinger Consumer Bags Division head Stéphane Soudais said: “Starlinger builds on decades of experience in woven polypropylene sack production, a type of packaging that is reusable and recyclable.

“Since 2013 we can produce PET tape fabric from virgin PET and recycled PET pellets on our machines which can be used for a variety of packaging applications.

“Now we have achieved another breakthrough in working with recycled PET: we can produce rPET tapes directly from PET bottle flakes.”

Starlinger said that the fabric made of PET tapes can be converted to various types of woven sacks or used for technical applications.

Starlinger claimed that sacks made from rPET flakes will not only be attractive on store shelves but also can be produced in a closed-loop system.

Soudais added: “With this material, producers of woven plastic packaging have the option of true closed loop production.”

The new rPET fabric, which meets US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for use in food packaging, allows customers to switch to woven rPET sacks for filling their product, with low investment.

The company noted that laminating the rPET fabric with reverse printed BOPET film offers attractive package design for consumer applications.

Starlinger plans to introduce the new solutions at the ArabPlast 2017 scheduled to be held In Dubai from 8-10 January.
